Prepare with a plan, not panic
IELTS rewards familiarity as much as fluency. Use structured practice to understand the test and build confidence.
Six-week plan
A timeline that works around a job
-
1
Weeks 1–2 · Know the format
Sit one full practice test untimed. Learn every question type in your module — surprises cost more marks than grammar does.
-
2
Weeks 3–4 · Train your weakest module
Most candidates lose the most marks in Writing. Practise Task 1 descriptions and Task 2 essays against the public band descriptors — structure first, vocabulary second.
-
3
Week 5 · Timed conditions
Two full tests under exam timing. Practise transferring answers and pacing: 20 minutes per Reading passage, 40 minutes for Writing Task 2.
-
Week 6 · Taper and logistics
Light speaking practice daily. Read the test-day guide, check your ID matches your booking, sleep.
