A sample IELTS test day

This is a general example, not the schedule for a published ELAREH test session. Check your provider’s booking confirmation for the actual times and instructions.

Example morning schedule

Arrive and check in
Bring the exact identity document listed in your booking. Staff check your identity and may take a photo for test security. You will be asked to store personal items, including your phone and watch.

Take your seat and check the equipment
A staff member shows you to your desk. Check the headphones and screen before the test begins, and raise your hand if anything is wrong.

Listening, Reading and Writing
These sections take about 2 hours and 45 minutes altogether, with no break between them. Follow the on-screen timer and the invigilators’ instructions.

Speaking test
The speaking test usually lasts 11–14 minutes and is conducted by a trained examiner. Your booking confirmation will give you the time and arrangements.

What to bring

The exact identity document shown in your booking confirmation; other documents may not be accepted.
Your booking reference, if your test provider asks for it.
A clear water bottle with its label removed, if permitted by your test centre.

What to leave outside the test room

Notes, dictionaries and electronic devices, unless your test provider has explicitly approved them.
Any personal item your test centre asks you to place in secure storage.

If something goes wrong — Tell a member of test-centre staff as soon as possible if you feel unwell, are delayed or have an equipment problem. Ask how the incident will be recorded and what options are available; any fee outcome depends on the provider’s policy and the circumstances.

After the test
